ENERGY STAR: Recognizing Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

The ENERGY STAR label is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy. It can be earned by single- and multifamily homes, various types of commercial and industrial buildings, and even retail products like appliances. The program encourages homeowners and developers to adopt energy-saving practices, switch to high-efficiency appliances, and reduce energy use. This helps cut both utility bills and environmental pollution. Commercial buildings that perform better than at least 75% of similar buildings nationwide may qualify for ENERGY STAR. New residential projects must meet or exceed the ENERGY STAR Reference Design. The EPA also recognizes top performers with awards like the ENERGY STAR Partner, Leader, and the prestigious Partner of the Year.

As a certified ENERGY STAR Service and Product Provider (SPP), The Cotocon Group has the expertise to help a wide range of clients earn the ENERGY STAR label. More importantly, our engineers approach benchmarking not just as a checklist — but as a way to save clients money and improve building comfort, health, and durability.

Ten Reasons to Pursue ENERGY STAR Certification (2025 Update)

  • In a time when many worry about “greenwashing,” ENERGY STAR stands out as the most trusted environmental label in the U.S. According to the EPA’s 2024 survey, over 88% of Americans recognize the ENERGY STAR logo. It remains the only national energy certification based on verified performance. This makes certified buildings more appealing to buyers and tenants who want real energy savings.
  • ENERGY STAR certified buildings use 30–35% less energy than similar buildings nationwide. The savings add up quickly. For example, certified office buildings save around $0.55 per square foot in energy costs. In 2023 alone, these buildings saved over $2.2 billion, according to the EPA.
  • Consistent energy savings also increase net operating income. This often leads to higher property values. A 2024 report by the Institute for Market Transformation showed that certified buildings tend to earn higher rents and property prices compared to non-certified ones.
  • Because these buildings use less energy, they also produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions — about 35% less on average. This supports local climate rules like NYC Local Law 97, as well as national carbon reduction goals. ENERGY STAR certification shows your building is helping lead the fight against climate change.
  • People today expect businesses to care about the environment. In a 2024 survey on sustainability, 72% of adults said they prefer to support eco-friendly companies. Over 80% of workers said they want to work for businesses that take sustainability seriously.
  • ENERGY STAR buildings often maintain higher occupancy rates. A 2023 study by the National Institute of Building Sciences showed that certified buildings had up to 4.5% higher occupancy than similar ones without the label.
  • If you're looking to lease space to a federal agency, ENERGY STAR is essential. Under Executive Order 14057, federal agencies must lease space in buildings that meet strict energy performance standards — often based on ENERGY STAR data.
  • For developers, earning the “Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR” label during the design phase helps confirm your project’s financial assumptions — like cost, rent, and occupancy. Some cities, including New York, Seattle, and San Francisco, also offer faster permits and tax breaks for certified projects.
  • As of 2025, more than 40 U.S. cities and states have passed building performance standards that reference ENERGY STAR. Getting certified now helps protect your property from future rules and penalties under laws like BPS and other local mandates.
  • Finally, the EPA’s free tools — like Portfolio Manager and Target Finder — help property owners benchmark and improve performance without paying for outside software or services.
  • The Cotocon Group is an ENERGY STAR Partner. We help clients earn certification and unlock long-term savings in energy, costs, and carbon emissions.
